I’m walking through the latest beta version of Agile Web Development with Rails 2nd Edition, specifically the new bits on deploying Rails apps. Capistrano – the preferred and recommended deployment utility. Thing is – Capistrano hinges on Subversion. Not something covered in AWDwR or appropriate to be covered. There’s plenty of other books on the subject.

Though, that left me stuck on how to set up a Subversion repository and access it.

Svnx For Macbook Pro

I do my hosting at TextDrive, and in the interest of making this process just a hair simpler, I set up my svn repository there. Here’s how I did it:

Svnx For Mac Os X

Svnx for mac mini
  1. Set up repository on TextDrive domain in webmin.[your-server].textdrive.com:80.
There’s a ‘subversion repository’ menu option right when you sign-in.
  2. Assign svn access rights to a TextDrive domain user.
It’s a radio button and select list selection in their profile.
  3. Install Subversion on your local Mac – I did via macports
  4. Install svnX and in svnX preferences, confirm your path to svn in svnX (macports uses /opt/local/bin)
  5. Import your project into the TextDrive repository
    svn import /Users/your/local/path/to/the/app http://[your-domain]/svn/[repository-name]/ -m 'initial import' --username=[your-svn-account-name]
  6. Connect svnX to the repository
    Path: http://[your-domain]/svn/[your-repository-name]
    User: [your-svn-user-name]
    Pass: [your-svn-user-name-pass]
  7. Check out your project back on to your mac by clicking the ‘svn export‘ button and picking a directory to put it (not your original directory). I created an /svn directory within my main project directory.
  8. Now, if everything worked, double-clicking the repository should load it up in a new window.
  9. I’ve got a weird proxy between me and the internet right now, so I’ll make sure the commits work tomorrow. UPDATE: Yep, it works. Yah!

Free Svn Client For Mac

As I am a beginner to this Subversion and I need it for my work
reasons, I need your help to solve this simple problem of how to
install it correctly.
STEPS ON HOW I INSTALLED SUBVERSION
1. I installed these 2 impt softwares from the website.
download/]
2. I installed the first software svnx and then installed the binary
file (obtained from Martin Ott)
3. When I open the file, the prompt up box prompts me to enter the
local directory (/local/users/bin). I did not change it at all. I just
leave it there.
4. I key in the repository url and working copy url as instructed by
my friend who is an expert in SubVersion (but only for Window. He is
totally unfamiliar with Macintosh).
5. When I double click on the repository url (verified correct), it
hanged for a while and then I had to kill the application.
RESULTS
The expected outcome is that I shld see the window display of all the
files
on respository and working copy directory. But the SVNX application
hanged
and forces me to kill it.
Secondly, it seems that I could not locate /local/users/bin as I am
using
Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Leopard.
I am not sure whether I key in the correct directory for the binary
file.
i.e. /local/users/bin.
Can you advise on whether the directory given that I am using the
latest model of MAC could be a problem here as I cannot find that
directory in the FINDER. I key in '/local/users/bin', '/bin', it does
not show any results. But when I select 'Go' and click 'Go Folder', I
can actually find the bin folder which seems that it is actually a
hidden folder!
OTHER INFO
Last time, I tried to download the binary file obtained from
http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/get-started-with-subversion-using-svnx/.
Instead of placing the file in the bin folder, I created a new folder
and placed the binary file there. I changed the directory pointing to
the binary and it worked. But the problem is that I cannot see the
window display as there is an error message saying that the connection
to the server does not work.
It seems that the binary file, that i downloaded last time, might not
be compatible with the svn software
Pls advise.
